Man-eater

Once, I'd dreamt of being a hunter

Of a man-eating beast

At people's behest I'd agreed to

Punish him for his deeds

What fear and agony he'd created

Among the innocent souls

I'd vowed to end the ghastly tales of

Cries, shrieks and howls

Right on target, mid of the forehead

You know, my hands were deft

He'd looked up, from where he stood

At quickness I was adept

The job was done, my heart was full

I'd won my coveted prize

Children were safe, men rejoiced

No more dispirited sighs.

Tired, relieved, in need of rest

Soon I was fast asleep

And then began another dream

In my mind's recesses deep

There he walked right up to me

With an unwavering gaze

It was as if the blood from the wound

Had set his eyes ablaze

"I wish you'd just spared a thought

Before this tale you made

But all you did was land a shot

Into a mere facade

I see your pride and why you loathe

The reason I killed your kin

A human need only be humane

To save oneself from sin

I have as many lives as you

A fact that's sad but true

The only way to terminate is

To kill me inside you "

Startled, I could feel his voice had

Reached my farthest cell

A reminiscence so dark and deep

One I am yet to quell
